It’s crucial that the government does not become complacent in its support for the Palestinian people now that a ceasefire has been agreed, according to Social Democrats foreign affairs spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.
Senator Stephenson said:
“While the announcement of a ceasefire is exceptionally good news, it’s now essential that our focus turns to its preservation and support for the humanitarian needs of a group that has been a victim of genocide and a region that’s been utterly levelled.
“We need to see a scale up of government funding and support for UNRWA and the WHO, as they’re the only bodies which have the capability to deliver large-scale aid into Gaza right now.
“A ceasefire monitor is also integral to the preservation of peace in Gaza – its formation must be at the top of the international agenda.
“Ireland must continue to lead by example when it comes to influencing other EU member states and our allies – Europe must not forget the genocide that has been committed by Israel during the past few years.
“While aid and monitors are urgently needed, we must remember that the atrocities perpetrated since October 7th 2023 violated countless human rights laws – Israel must be held to account for its ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza, and the destruction of their city.
“Without justice, there can be no lasting peace – I’m calling on the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs to scale up support for these initiatives.
“To show this commitment, the government should begin with the urgent passing of the Occupied Territories Bill in its form which covers goods and services.”
