Social Democrats TD Jen Cummins has strongly criticised opposition from a number of government TDs to the Education Minister’s plans for more multidenominational schools.

Deputy Cummins, who is the party’s education spokesperson, said:

“Despite a pledge from Minister McEntee last week to give parents more choice by increasing the number of multidenominational schools, it is clear from reports today that there is no consensus on this issue within the ranks of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael backbenchers.

“The cynical attempts by certain TDs to undermine their own Minister so publicly speaks to the level of dysfunction and lack of cohesion within this new government.

“Their suggestion that there is no real demand for divesting schools from religious patronage is uninformed and flies in the face of what parents and educators have been calling for.

“Just last week, a survey from the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) confirmed widespread support among primary school teachers for a reduced role of religion in our classrooms. The results highlight the growing realisation in Irish society that our education system must evolve to reflect the diversity of modern Ireland.

“The survey also found that most primary teachers want secular patrons for schools and believe faith formation should no longer take place in the classroom.

“This is a view shared by the Social Democrats. We have consistently called for our schools to be secular and believe that our education system must be inclusive and respectful of all beliefs and none.

“The last programme for government committed to delivering 400 multidenominational primary schools by 2030. However, given the lack of progress to date, with 94 per cent of schools still under religious patronage, it is most unlikely this target can be achieved.

“Parents across the country are calling for more choice through the expansion of multi-denominational schools, which offer a respectful, welcoming environment for children of all backgrounds.

“We need to accelerate these efforts to ensure every family can access a school that represents their values and respects all identities. It’s not just about education – it’s about equality and inclusion.”
