Social Democrats TD Liam Quaide has expressed grave concern following the findings of an investigation into Bloomfield Hospital in south Dublin, which details serious incidents of mistreatment and abuse of residents.
Deputy Quaide, who is the party’s spokesperson on mental health, said:
“The findings contained in this report are deeply disturbing. Evidence that residents were left soiled for prolonged periods of time, slapped, verbally abused and threatened with injections to secure compliance represent a shocking pattern of mistreatment and an abject failure of care.
“Every person receiving mental health support has an absolute right to dignity, respect and compassionate care. These are not aspirational values – they are basic human rights.
“What is particularly troubling is that these revelations sit alongside 94 per cent compliance ratings for Bloomfield Hospital in the Mental Health Commission’s inspection reports, as recently as September and for each of the past three years. This raises serious questions about the adequacy of current oversight mechanisms and whether they are capable of detecting serious harm to service users in such settings.
“The fact that these patterns of mistreatment only came to light through the actions of a whistleblower is especially concerning. While we must support whistleblowers, we should not be reliant on them to protect the welfare of people residing in care settings.
“These reports reinforce the critical importance of safeguards, including a statutory right to independent advocacy and an independent complaints mechanism, which I have consistently raised in debates on the Mental Health Bill. Without these protections, service users are too often left without a voice when failings in care or abuses occur.
“Patients and their families place their trust in services like Bloomfield at times of profound vulnerability. That trust has been severely undermined by what has emerged from this investigation.
“The scale and seriousness of these findings demand a robust response. I am now calling for the Oireachtas Health Committee to urgently examine this matter so families can be assured there will be full accountability and a radical overhaul of the service at Bloomfield.”
