The measures announced by the government this evening do not address wider cost of living challenges, according to Social Democrats Deputy Leader and Finance spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan.

“Yet again, the government has failed to do anything to tackle the skyrocketing cost of home heating oil – which 700,000 households are reliant on.

“This government are either unwilling or unable to get to grips with a spiralling cost-of-living crisis which is having a devastating impact on individuals and families all over the country.

“Many low and middle-income families are barely keeping their heads above water. The government is not listening to them and it’s not helping them.

“These individuals and families need targeted supports, as a matter of urgency, so they can withstand these price shocks.

“On Wednesday, the Dáil will debate a Social Democrats’ motion which proposes a range of supports, including a targeted €400 energy credit and a supplementary mileage scheme for essential workers, like nurses and carers.”
