A scoping inquiry into Michael Shine, the former surgeon convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse, is welcome but must lead to a full statutory inquiry, according to Social Democrats health spokesperson Pádraig Rice.

Deputy Rice said:

“I welcome the news that the cabinet is set to approve a scoping inquiry into Michael Shine tomorrow – it’s important that this happens at the earliest opportunity and sticks to its 16-week timeframe.

“It is also essential that this scoping inquiry is followed by a full statutory inquiry, which victims have waited for for far too long.

“There are too many cases of abuse in which the state has dragged its heels when it comes to establishing inquiries, ensuring transparency and delivering accountability.

“It’s crucial that any ultimate statutory inquiry is victim-centred and adheres to their experiences and needs. Victims’ stories must be listened to and their questions must be answered. Above all, we must ensure that nothing like this can never happen again.

“The Social Democrats will work with the government in whatever way we can to advance this important work and get justice for victims.”
