Despite report after report painting a dire picture of conditions in our care system, the Minister for Children has repeatedly failed to take action, according to Social Democrats children spokesperson Aidan Farrelly.
Deputy Farrelly said:
“The severe shortage of special care unit beds is putting the lives of children in danger, and has been for a very long time now.
“High court judgements are now routinely ignored because of the State’s inability to provide critical services for vulnerable children.
“On average, between 34 and 35 children in Tusla’s care have been deemed missing every fortnight since 2023 – this is an appalling indictment of a government which claims it puts children first.
“In May, an external review of special care commissioned by Tusla found that the system was in crisis, with a severe shortage of beds and staffing at the country’s three special care centres.
“Now, it’s come to light that there are no available special care beds until January, no matter the risk level a child is faced with. This is hugely concerning and a complete indictment of this government.
“The reality is this government is breaking the law when it comes to protecting vulnerable children – and has been for many years.
“The government must take immediate action to increase the special care system’s capacity by increasing staffing levels and creating new beds.
“I will be raising this issue directly with Minister Norma Foley in the Dáil this week and demanding answers and, crucially, action.
“This year has seen unprecedented levels of tragedy in our care system, yet the Minister has acted largely as a commentator – this is a time for leadership, yet all we’ve seen is inaction.”
