The student accommodation sector is in need of urgent reform, with students undergoing disproportionate hardship just to find somewhere to live, according to Social Democrats education spokesperson Jen Cummins.
Deputy Cummins said:
“Student accommodation has gotten so expensive that some colleges’ student unions, such as UCD’s, have felt compelled to start a food bank for its members who are struggling to make ends meet.
“The most affordable room on the university’s campus costs almost €6,000 per annum, while the most expensive is just short of €12,000 – these astronomical prices are a major barrier to entry for students from low to middle income families.
“In contrast, students in cities like Berlin pay closer to €400 per month on average, and in Lisbon, many pay between €300 and €500 – Ireland is now one of the most expensive countries in Europe to be a student.
“Meanwhile, the Consumer Protection Commission has warned of an increase in rental scams in the lead up to the college term, with many listings illegally charging prospective renters for a viewing or deposits before signing a lease.
“Avoiding these obstacles, as well as competing intensely for the shortage of legitimate properties that are available to rent, has led to househunting becoming a full-time pursuit for many students, impeding those who are already committed to working jobs to afford their education.
“Students and families across the country are already grappling with an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis, and that’s before considering the mooted €1,000 increase in the student contribution fee.
“Eyewatering rental costs, nefarious scams and a dire shortage of supply has left students in an impossible position, which will result in vulnerable cohorts missing out on the education they deserve.
“Education is a right, not a privilege, and the Minister for Higher Education and the Minister for Housing must enshrine this fact in their actions – the student accommodation sector must be subject to reform, starting now.”
