Statement from Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns on the party’s general election results:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the Social Democrats set to make historic gains throughout the country in this election, this has been a monumental week for me, both personally and politically.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur success in this election is down to the calibre of our candidates and the positive campaign we ran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Social Democrats did not engage in auction politics, we were clear with the electorate about what our dealbreakers for government would be, and that clarity and sincerity helped us to stand out from other parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is clear from the party\u2019s incredible performance this weekend that our message \u2013 on issues such as housing, disability, healthcare, childcare and climate action \u2013 really resonated with people on the doors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to the overwhelming mandate we have received, we are now on course to significantly increase our number of TDs. In due course, we will talk to all the other parties about government formation.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn a personal basis, I am so honoured to have been re-elected as a TD for Cork South-West. The fact that this coincided with another extremely happy event \u2013 the birth of my daughter \u2013 makes this a joyous weekend that I will never forget.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to thank all those who voted for me, as well as my local team and supporters who worked tirelessly on my behalf, particularly in the final few weeks of the election campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would also like to thank the staff at Cork University Maternity Hospital, who treated my family and I with incredible care and kindness throughout my pregnancy and this weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, I would also like to thank all of the excellent candidates who stood for the Social Democrats, some of whom narrowly missed out on seats.<\/p>\n

“The party is in a very strong position to play an important role in the next D\u00e1il. In what position, government or opposition, remains to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n
