The D\u00e1il must be recalled this week to discuss the devastation caused by Storm \u00c9owyn along with plans to provide support to the hundreds and thousands of people still without electricity and water, according to Social Democrats acting leader Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n
\u201cStorm \u00c9owyn left a trail of utter destruction in its wake, with the west coast particularly badly impacted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree days later, there are still 260,000 households and businesses without electricity \u2013 with 100,000 now expected to be without power until the end of next week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a real crisis, which is having a devastating impact on hundreds and thousands of people. Not only are many families without power, tens of thousands are also without water.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation is particularly difficult for families with young children and for farmers who are trying to feed animals and milk cattle.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ESB and emergency services have done incredible work to try to restore services in difficult conditions. They should not be working in a vacuum.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt beggars belief that, in the midst of this crisis, there are no plans for the D\u00e1il to sit.<\/p>\n
\u201cStorm \u00c9owyn was one of the most powerful and damaging wind events to hit the country in nearly 200 years. Yet, the government wants to continue with a two-week recess while families and communities are left to pick up the pieces.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is critical that the D\u00e1il sits this week so that the destruction that has been caused in so many parts of the country can be discussed \u2013 along with plans to provide emergency supports.\u201d<\/p>\n
