{"id":12312,"date":"2025-05-01T16:34:20","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T15:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/?p=12312"},"modified":"2025-05-01T16:34:20","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T15:34:20","slug":"transgender-healthcare-in-ireland-must-be-brought-into-line-with-international-best-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/transgender-healthcare-in-ireland-must-be-brought-into-line-with-international-best-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Transgender healthcare in Ireland must be brought into line with international best practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trans people in Ireland are being denied access to timely gender-affirming care, according to Social Democrats TD P\u00e1draig Rice.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Rice, who\u2019s the party\u2019s health spokesperson, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIreland\u2019s transgender healthcare services need urgent reform and reconfiguration to adequately provide for the trans community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2022, Ireland was found to have the worst healthcare system for trans people among 27 EU Member States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only dedicated gender clinic in the country has a waiting list of over 2,000 people \u2013 with only 162 people taken off the list last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunity estimates now suggest that there is a thirteen-year wait time for an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only is this service oversubscribed, but it is also based on an outdated model of care that is at odds with international best practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2019, the WHO reclassified trans healthcare as part of sexual health rather than mental health, yet the system in Ireland still treats being trans as a mental disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also know that access to trans healthcare is lifesaving for so many.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 2013 Transgender Equality Network Ireland study found that 78% of transgender people have considered suicide \u2013 but after accessing trans healthcare, this drops to just 4%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe HSE is in the process of developing a new model of gender-affirming care but this work must be accelerated, and it should be done in partnership with the trans community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny new trans healthcare programme must be in line with WHO guidance, under an informed consent model, and delivered in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis marginalised community must not be denied the care it deserves any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>May 1st, 2025<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trans people in Ireland are being denied access to timely gender-affirming care, according to Social Democrats TD P\u00e1draig Rice.
