{"id":12374,"date":"2025-05-09T12:31:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T11:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/?p=12374"},"modified":"2025-05-09T12:34:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T11:34:45","slug":"lack-of-resources-contributing-to-restrictive-entry-to-additional-needs-classes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/lack-of-resources-contributing-to-restrictive-entry-to-additional-needs-classes\/","title":{"rendered":"Lack of resources contributing to restrictive entry to additional needs classes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social Democrats TD Liam Quaide has expressed concern after the Department of Education Inspectorate found issues with almost all admission policies used by a selection of mainstream schools to determine entry to additional needs classes.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Quaide, who is the party\u2019s spokesperson on disability, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are clear issues highlighted in this review \u2013 which examined 15 primary and 15 post-primary schools \u2013 around the exclusion of children with additional needs that have the potential to impact significantly on their right to education and their development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe restrictions in these policies need to be examined within the context of major resource limitations in mainstream schools and special schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany schools are not being granted enough Special Needs Assistants (SNAs). In addition, schools are also conscious that a child should not begin their education in a setting that will be unsuitable for them in the medium and long-term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet schools can come under pressure to take students who are not able to sustain their placement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important the Department does not blame schools for these issues without acknowledging that it is their responsibility to allocate sufficient resources.
