{"id":12666,"date":"2025-06-09T10:26:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/?p=12666"},"modified":"2025-06-09T10:26:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T09:26:58","slug":"senator-patricia-stephenson-condemns-arrest-of-madleen-crew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/senator-patricia-stephenson-condemns-arrest-of-madleen-crew\/","title":{"rendered":"Senator Patricia Stephenson condemns arrest of \u2018Madleen\u2019 crew by Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The interception of the \u2018Madleen\u2019 charity vessel and arrest of its crew by Israeli forces represents another egregious breach of international law, according to Senator Patricia Stephenson.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Stephenson, who is the Social Democrats\u2019 spokesperson on foreign affairs, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to commend the bravery and determination of the 12 peace activists who took part in this deeply symbolic humanitarian mission to bring emergency aid to the people of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of those arrested must be fully guaranteed by the Israeli government, who continue to act as if they are immune to international law and have shown they are capable of anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arrest of EU citizens by Israel must be roundly condemned by all member states, including Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis incident must strengthen Ireland\u2019s resolve to take meaningful action against Israel for its litany of war crimes, with more than 54,000 Palestinians now dead since this conflict began and two million people facing imminent starvation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Wednesday, the government will have another opportunity to stop the Central Bank facilitating the sale of Israeli war bonds, with the Social Democrats using its D\u00e1il time to bring forward a cross-party motion on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that Ireland is a signatory to the Genocide Convention, we have a legal responsibility to do whatever we can to stop a genocide from occurring or persisting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>June 9, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The interception of the \u2018Madleen\u2019 charity vessel and arrest of its crew by Israeli forces represents another egregious breach of international law, according to Senator Patricia Stephenson.
