Social Democrats TD Jen Cummins has slammed reports of third level students having to endure shocking living conditions in seriously overcrowded accommodation.<\/p>\n
Deputy Cummins, who is the party\u2019s spokesperson on further and higher education, said:<\/p>\n
\u201cI am appalled at revelations that postgraduate students attending Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Limerick have been crammed into wholly unsuitable housing.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne student, speaking on Live 95 today, described the distressing reality of sharing a four-bedroom house with 17 others. The property, located on High Road in Limerick city, has just one bathroom and a small kitchen, with students forced to sleep in hallways and on landings.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany are too afraid to leave their belongings unattended while some have even missed lectures due to the chaotic and unsafe environment they have found themselves in.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis completely unacceptable situation is deeply damaging to the wellbeing of students who come to Ireland in good faith to study. No young person can be expected to learn, grow, or thrive in conditions like these.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are talking about students who paid deposits in advance and trusted that they would be provided with safe and adequate accommodation. Instead, they have been left in overcrowded and degrading living conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been reported that this property had been advertised abroad, drawing students from India to Ireland under false pretences. Despite desperate overcrowding, the property continues to be advertised online.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is more than just a housing issue \u2013 it is an educational one. How can we expect students to succeed in their studies when they are worried about where they will sleep, how they will cook, or whether their belongings are safe? It is impossible to learn under these conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation highlights the need for urgent intervention to address the student accommodation crisis in Limerick and beyond. Campaigners argue that without immediate action, Ireland\u2019s reputation as a welcoming place for international students risks being seriously damaged, while vulnerable young people continue to suffer in silence.\u201d<\/p>\n
