{"id":1345,"date":"2020-12-10T11:10:17","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T11:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/deportation-cases-highlight-need-for-urgent-reform-of-immigration-system\/"},"modified":"2020-12-10T11:10:17","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T11:10:17","slug":"deportation-cases-highlight-need-for-urgent-reform-of-immigration-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/deportation-cases-highlight-need-for-urgent-reform-of-immigration-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Deportation cases highlight need for urgent reform of immigration system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore has called for urgent reform of our immigration system following confirmation from the Taoiseach yesterday that there would be a stay on deportations for the duration of the Covid-19 crisis,<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Whitmore said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the Taoiseach\u2019s statement in the D\u00e1il yesterday was most welcome and a stay on deportations during the pandemic has been confirmed, it is clear that our immigration system needs urgent reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA temporary stay on deportation is not a permanent solution and it is time that policy reflects the realities of many people faced with deportation at a moment\u2019s notice in this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, there are people falling through the gaps \u2013 putting down roots in communities and even having families \u2013 without having certainty of their status in Ireland. They continue to live in the shadow of deportation. These people are none the wiser as to what will happen to them when the current pandemic is behind us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is currently a White Paper review of our Direct Provision and International Protection system, which is due imminently.
