A lack of resources in Tusla is continuing to endanger children, according to Social Democrats children spokesperson Aidan Farrelly.<\/p>\n
Deputy Farrelly said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new HIQA report is yet another alarm bell that is loudly ringing about inadequate services at Tusla posing risks to children.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has revealed that it took the agency more than six months to take any action in relation to safeguarding risks identified for some children in Dublin\u2019s north inner city.<\/p>\n
\u201cDublin\u2019s north inner city is one of the most deprived areas in the country, yet the service there was found to be non-compliant in all five child protection and welfare standards that were assessed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is largely down to chronic staff shortages. How can 19 social workers, no matter how highly dedicated or expertly trained, do the job of the 52 social workers who are needed to make these services function at an acceptable level?<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Tusla does not have the capacity to provide emergency services for children who are alleged to be victims of abuse, the agency is not fit for purpose.<\/p>\n
\u201cMajor reform, including a large recruitment drive, is needed right now if we are to prevent further tragedies in our care system.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegrettably, there has been no indication from the Minister that she is acting with the urgency that is required to implement the necessary changes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Minister must now step up and take control of the spiralling crisis in Tusla.\u201d<\/p>\n
