{"id":14518,"date":"2025-11-25T12:02:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T12:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/?p=14518"},"modified":"2025-11-25T12:02:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T12:02:09","slug":"michael-shine-inquiry-must-proceed-quickly-and-be-victim-centred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/michael-shine-inquiry-must-proceed-quickly-and-be-victim-centred\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Shine inquiry must proceed quickly and be victim-centred"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A scoping inquiry into Michael Shine, the former surgeon convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse, is welcome but must lead to a full statutory inquiry, according to Social Democrats health spokesperson P\u00e1draig Rice.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Rice said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI welcome the news that the cabinet is set to approve a scoping inquiry into Michael Shine tomorrow &#8211; it\u2019s important that this happens at the earliest opportunity and sticks to its 16-week timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also essential that this scoping inquiry is followed by a full statutory inquiry, which victims have waited for for far too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are too many cases of abuse in which the state has dragged its heels when it comes to establishing inquiries, ensuring transparency and delivering accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crucial that any ultimate statutory inquiry is victim-centred and adheres to their experiences and needs. Victims\u2019 stories must be listened to and their questions must be answered.
