The closure of The Complex arts centre will have devastating effects for Dublin\u2019s cultural scene, according to Social Democrats arts spokesperson Sin\u00e9ad Gibney.<\/p>\n
Deputy Gibney said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Complex has been home to exhibitions, gigs, and studio spaces since 2019 – it is now one of the most established cultural hubs in the city, with its own vibrant community and history.<\/p>\n
\u201cDespite management\u2019s years-long campaign to secure capital funding for the development of the building, the government has turned a blind eye, as it has to countless art spaces around the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn recent years, Dublin has seen the closure of Jigsaw, Hangar, The Tivoli Theatre, and countless other venues – there\u2019s very few places left to take in our Capital\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Complex\u2019s studio artists have now been given one month\u2019s notice to vacate their spaces – the space is integral to Dublin\u2019s art, music and creative industry. Without it, the city\u2019s cultural offerings will dwindle further.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe venue\u2019s programme for 2026, including its commissions, gigs and exhibitions, has now been cancelled – the local economy will suffer as a result.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Social Democrats has advocated for special commercial rates for creative and arts spaces, as well as multi-annual funding for essential arts organisations like The Complex, but the government has ignored our plea, showing that art and artists are not valued.<\/p>\n
\u201cI implore the government to recognise the essential function of The Complex and do everything in its power to work with its management to preserve what has become an integral part of Dublin\u2019s cultural infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n
