{"id":15049,"date":"2026-01-15T15:24:49","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T15:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/?p=15049"},"modified":"2026-01-15T15:24:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T15:24:49","slug":"taxpayers-must-not-be-on-the-hook-for-money-overpaid-to-serving-and-former-ministers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/taxpayers-must-not-be-on-the-hook-for-money-overpaid-to-serving-and-former-ministers\/","title":{"rendered":"Taxpayers must not be on the hook for money overpaid to serving and former ministers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is inexcusable that more than 30 serving and former ministers have yet to commence a process to repay pension money that was overpaid to them in error, according to Social Democrats finance spokesperson Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy O\u2019Callaghan said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, it emerged that 34 serving ministers, and 39 former ministers, had been overpaid as a result of miscalculations made on their pension entitlements by the National Shared Services Office (NSSO).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now know that 10 current ministers and 22 former ministers who were overpaid have yet to agree a plan to repay the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are individuals on salaries exceeding \u20ac180,000 \u2013 people with every capacity to settle the debt immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, months after the error first came to light, the public is expected to tolerate delay, ambiguity, and silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis money was never theirs to hold onto. Every day it remains unpaid is another day the government signals that standards apply to everyone except those who set them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccountability cannot be optional for ministers. Repayment should have been swift, automatic, and transparent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring Leaders\u2019 Questions today, Enterprise Minister Peter Burke was unable to shed any light on the issue, other than to say that the individuals involved were seeking clarity from the NSSO. This was an extremely unsatisfactory response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe taxpayer must not be on the hook for this money.
