{"id":1559,"date":"2021-04-27T08:37:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T07:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/new-national-forensic-mental-health-service-to-open-by-september\/"},"modified":"2021-04-27T08:37:25","modified_gmt":"2021-04-27T07:37:25","slug":"new-national-forensic-mental-health-service-to-open-by-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/new-national-forensic-mental-health-service-to-open-by-september\/","title":{"rendered":"New national forensic mental health service to open by September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Delay is indicative of the lack of resources invested in mental health services by this government<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The new National Forensic Mental Health Services Hospital, Portrane, is due open by September, Social Democrats Councillor Paul Mulville has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaking in November, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said the new\u00a0National Forensic Mental Health Services (NFMHS) facility in Portrane would be handed over to the HSE in December and the expectation was that it would open at the end of March or April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, thanks to a D\u00e1il question tabled by my colleague R\u00f3is\u00edn Shortall TD, we now know the new facility, which will replace the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum, will not have sufficient staff to open until at least the third quarter of this year \u2013 and even then, it will likely open on a phased basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the HSE\u2019s General Manager of Mental Health Services, Thomas O\u2019Brien, the new Portrane facility was formally handed over to the HSE\u2019s Management Team of the Central Mental Hospital on March 22, 2021. It is currently being equipped and a period of testing and training is being conducted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, Mr O\u2019Brien has confirmed that the HSE does not expect to have sufficient staff to open the new facility until the third quarter of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis delay is indicative of the lack of resources invested in mental health services by this government. Despite the mental health crisis that has been caused by the pandemic, there has been a 1pc reduction in the overall share of the health budget allocated to mental health services this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, Minister of State with Responsibility for Mental Health, Mary Butler, has herself conceded that the increased bed capacity in the new NFMHS facility, from 93 to 110 and up to a maximum of 130 beds, \u201cwill not entirely keep pace with the trends in demand for places\u201d.
