{"id":1640,"date":"2021-07-12T13:47:40","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T12:47:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/hiqa-should-conduct-independent-investigations-of-all-homeless-services\/"},"modified":"2021-07-12T13:47:40","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T12:47:40","slug":"hiqa-should-conduct-independent-investigations-of-all-homeless-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/hiqa-should-conduct-independent-investigations-of-all-homeless-services\/","title":{"rendered":"HIQA Should Conduct Independent Investigations Of All Homeless Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Several privately-run emergency accommodation centres were operating until recently without fire certs<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) should conduct independent inspections of all homeless services, according to Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation is contained in an Interim Report on Homelessness, published by the Oireachtas Housing Committee today.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy O\u2019Callaghan said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have very serious concerns about the conditions in some privately-run emergency accommodation for people who are experiencing homelessness. Several places were operating until recently without even having fire certs. There are people sleeping in rooms without windows. In addition, some of the staff in private hostels lack the skills and training required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s report from the Oireachtas Housing Committee calls for HIQA to be appointed to conduct independent inspections of all homeless services. This must happen as a matter of urgency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t have a two-tier system of standards \u2013 with private providers held to a lower standard. It is vital that the National Quality Standards Framework is applied to all services for all people who have become homeless as was initially planned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to ensure the best supports possible are provided to those experiencing homelessness. As part of this, it is vital that everyone who needs it has access to a housing support worker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of private emergency accommodation must be phased out quickly and replaced with supported temporary accommodation, Housing First and, crucially, long-term housing.
