New Hungarian Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar must follow through on his commitment to EU values and reverse Hungary\u2019s draconian anti-LGBTI law, according to Social Democrats foreign affairs spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.<\/p>\n
Senator Stephenson said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that Hungary\u2019s 2021 \u2018anti-LGBTI propaganda\u2019 law breaches Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union, which enshrines the Union\u2019s fundamental values.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis ruling, which found that the Orb\u00e1n regime seriously interfered with the fundamental rights of those in the LGBTI community, is long overdue and welcome.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s long past time that discrimination based on sexual orientation is ended in Hungary, and that there is respect for private and family life, freedom of expression and the right to human dignity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is now imperative that P\u00e9ter Magyar, who asserts that he is pro-EU, withdraws Hungary\u2019s anti-LGBTI law at the earliest possible opportunity, including the Pride ban – there are no more excuses.<\/p>\n
\u201cI support the court\u2019s decision that, if these changes are not forthcoming, Hungary must face due process for this discriminatory law.\u201d<\/p>\n
