{"id":1871,"date":"2022-08-04T17:13:52","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T16:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/government-must-commit-to-windfall-tax-on-energy-companies\/"},"modified":"2022-08-04T17:13:52","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T16:13:52","slug":"government-must-commit-to-windfall-tax-on-energy-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/government-must-commit-to-windfall-tax-on-energy-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Must Commit To Windfall Tax On Energy Companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>There is no excuse for any further delay<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The government must commit to introducing a windfall tax on energy companies, according to Social Democrats Climate Spokesperson Jennifer Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary General of the UN, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, has called on governments around the world to tax the super-profits of energy companies \u2013 and use that revenue to ensure the most vulnerable are not hardest hit by the cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest example of super profits being made by energy companies in this country is the 74% increase in profits at Bord G\u00e1is Energy this week. Despite this, the government has refused to commit to the introduction of a windfall tax on energy companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is immoral that energy companies are profiteering on the energy crisis, caused by the war in Ukraine, to extract excessive profits from low and middle-income families. The government must tax these grotesque profits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the UK, a windfall tax of 25% was introduced in July \u2013 which was too late to capture the \u20ac8 billion in profit made by BP in the second quarter of this year. We cannot allow the government to continue to delay the introduction of a windfall tax here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should make the decision now and introduce it, at 25%, prior to the budget \u2013 to ensure that super profits, being made at the moment, are subject to the tax.
