{"id":1927,"date":"2022-10-13T10:10:23","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T09:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/government-must-reveal-how-much-an-bord-pleanala-shambles-will-cost\/"},"modified":"2022-10-13T10:10:23","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T09:10:23","slug":"government-must-reveal-how-much-an-bord-pleanala-shambles-will-cost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/government-must-reveal-how-much-an-bord-pleanala-shambles-will-cost\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Must Reveal How Much An Bord Plean\u00e1la Shambles Will Cost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>We need answers about how much this mess is likely to cost taxpayers\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The chaos engulfing An Bord Plean\u00e1la is costing the State dearly as fees for delays and legal challenges soar, according to Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the Irish Independent reported An Bord Plean\u00e1la (ABP) has paid out more than \u20ac1 million to developers because of a backlog in processing applications for Strategic Housing Developments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, this week we also learned that planning permissions for more than 1,700 housing units have been quashed after ABP conceded High Court legal challenges to these developments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat decision was made after allegations of objective bias were raised in respect of ABP\u2019s decision-making process \u2013 and ABP will be on the hook for all of the legal costs arising from those challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the D\u00e1il yesterday, I asked Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath how many planning permissions were going to be quashed as a result of this scandal and what were the cost implications for ABP \u2013 and therefore, the State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBizarrely, the Minister said he was unable to provide that information \u2013 despite the fact that ABP has opted not to defend certain High Court cases, so that information should be readily available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, the fall-out from the controversy engulfing ABP is continuing to wreak havoc in the planning system \u2013 and is having major cost implications for the State. We need answers about how much this mess is likely to cost taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a minimum, ABP should be transparent about the number of SHD applications that are pending and likely to incur hefty fines because of delayed decision making.
