{"id":1965,"date":"2022-11-23T14:26:43","date_gmt":"2022-11-23T14:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/minister-must-ensure-that-junior-cert-debacle-is-never-repeated\/"},"modified":"2022-11-23T14:26:43","modified_gmt":"2022-11-23T14:26:43","slug":"minister-must-ensure-that-junior-cert-debacle-is-never-repeated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/minister-must-ensure-that-junior-cert-debacle-is-never-repeated\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister must ensure that Junior Cert debacle is never repeated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Students finally receive their results \u2013 six months after sitting their exams<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon has congratulated students on finally receiving their Junior Cert results today, but called on the Minister for Education to provide assurances that the long delays in correcting this year\u2019s exams will never happen again.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Gannon, who is the party\u2019s Education spokesperson, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is a special day for the more than 67,000 students receiving their Junior Cert and I hope they all get the results they have worked so hard for \u2013 and waited so long for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cohort of students have faced unprecedented delays in having their exams corrected. It is disgraceful when you realise that they sat their Junior Cert six months ago in June and are only receiving their results a few weeks before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe delays have caused considerable anxiety for students, particularly those who went straight into fifth year and were relying on their results to determine if they should take ordinary or higher level subjects for the Leaving Cert cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also had implications for students participating in the Leaving Cert Applied programme, or those who left school and needed their Junior Cert results to enter the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I raised this issue in the D\u00e1il with the Minister for Education back in October, she informed me that a review would be carried out into how best to increase the availability of examiners for future Junior Cert exams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the results are issued today by the State Examinations Commission, I am calling on Minister Foley for a full update on how this review is progressing and for her assurance that students will not face a similar debacle next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all the stress caused by delays in marking exam papers, it is the very least she can do for the thousands of students celebrating this educational milestone today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>November 23, 2022<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students finally receive their results \u2013 six months after sitting their exams Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon has congratulated students on finally receiving their Junior Cert results today, but called on the Minister for Education to provide assurances that the long delays in correcting this year\u2019s exams will never happen again.
