{"id":1989,"date":"2022-12-13T15:01:43","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T15:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/plans-to-legislate-for-international-surrogacy-are-overdue-but-welcome\/"},"modified":"2022-12-13T15:01:43","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T15:01:43","slug":"plans-to-legislate-for-international-surrogacy-are-overdue-but-welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/plans-to-legislate-for-international-surrogacy-are-overdue-but-welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans To Legislate For International Surrogacy Are Overdue But Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Parents and families should not have to wait any longer for the protections and security of legal certainty<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Confirmation that that Government intends to legislate for international surrogacy is hugely welcome, according to Social Democrats Children\u2019s spokesperson Jennifer Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Whitmore, who chaired the Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pleased that the Government appears to be taking on board all of the recommendations from the final report of the Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee on International Surrogacy made 32 separate recommendations, which would help to ensure that international surrogacy can take place in a safe and ethical manner, and the Government is now moving ahead to include them in legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary concern must be the interests of children and their families. As it stands, hundreds of children who are Irish citizens born through surrogacy have no legal relationship with their mothers or some of their fathers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been an unconscionable failure by successive governments to regulate this hugely complex area to date.
