{"id":2145,"date":"2023-06-27T11:47:59","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T10:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/future-of-nature-restoration-law-hangs-in-the-balance-after-tied-vote\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T12:32:44","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T11:32:44","slug":"future-of-nature-restoration-law-hangs-in-the-balance-after-tied-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/future-of-nature-restoration-law-hangs-in-the-balance-after-tied-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Future of Nature Restoration Law hangs in the balance after tied vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Government parties must present a united front before law is discussed at plenary session of European Parliament next month<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Government must be unequivocal in its support for Nature Restoration Law following today\u2019s rejection of the proposed legislation by the European Parliament\u2019s Environment Committee, according to Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Whitmore, who is the party\u2019s spokesperson on climate action and biodiversity, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s tied vote result, which saw 44 MEPs in favour and 44 against, means the Environment Committee will recommend rejection of Nature Restoration Law when it goes before the plenary session of the European Parliament in mid-July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire debate surrounding nature restoration \u2013 both in Ireland and in Europe \u2013 has been characterised by political grandstanding, misinformation and scaremongering.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Opposition to the law by the European People\u2019s Party (EPP) \u2013 to which Fine Gael MEPs are aligned \u2013 has been a major impediment to getting it across the line. Comments made by the Taoiseach, who said he believes the law goes too far, have also been deeply unhelpful and divisive during this debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the rewetting of peatland has emerged as the main point of tension in Ireland, many of the fears \u2013 which are being stoked up by certain TDs and Irish MEPs \u2013 are unfounded. In fact, most of the rewetting can take place on State-owned lands and there are funding supports proposed to help those most affected, such as farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis continent-wide law calls for binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems \u2013 particularly those with the most potential to capture and store carbon \u2013 and reduce the impact of climate change and biodiversity loss. The measures will cover at least 20 per cent of the EU\u2019s land and sea areas by 2030, and ultimately all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Coalition parties must be coherent on the urgent need for nature restoration and present a united front in the run up to next month\u2019s plenary session of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stakes could not be any higher.
