There must be consequences for anyone attempting to sexually exploit people who are desperately trying to put a roof over their heads\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A shocking RT\u00c9 Investigates report will this week lay bare the consequences of the Government\u2019s failure to protect renters from sexual exploitation, according to Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n

Deputy O\u2019Callaghan, who is the party\u2019s spokesperson on housing, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe special report, to be broadcast on Prime Time this Thursday, will show why there is an urgent need for clear legislation to deter opportunists from seeking sexual favours from vulnerable renters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is now more than a year since I introduced the Ban on Sex For Rent Bill 2022, which was killed off by this Government. This would have created an offence of requiring or accepting sex as a condition of accommodation, with penalties of up to seven years in prison or a \u20ac50,000 fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite promising at the time to act on the issue, the Government has failed to bring in its own legislation. RT\u00c9\u2019s secretly recorded footage of tenants being asked for sex in return for a desperately needed place to stay is a direct result of this inaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cRenters are already facing an uphill battle due to the lifting of the eviction ban and ever-dwindling supply of properties. There must be consequences for anyone attempting to sexually exploit people who are just trying to put a roof over their heads.\u201d<\/p>\n
