Failure to provide enough affordable housing has left a generation unable to make their own start in life<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Census results released today show that the number of adults still living with their parents has skyrocketed under this Government, according to Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n

Deputy O\u2019Callaghan, who is the party\u2019s housing spokesperson, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are now 522,486 adults still living in their childhood bedrooms. This represents a 14 per cent rise since the last census in 2016 and a 19 per cent increase since Fine Gael took office in 2011.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocked out of home ownership and unable to afford Ireland\u2019s exorbitant rents, this generation face the choice of living with their parents indefinitely or emigrating to a country where they can afford to live independently.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing stuck in a childhood bedroom can have profoundly negative impacts on mental health, self-esteem and the ability to form and maintain relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe failure to provide enough affordable housing has left a generation unable to make their own start in life.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther European countries that provide significant levels of affordable housing do not have this problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Minister for Housing pays lip service to affordable housing, but his delivery record is abysmal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe generation locked out of housing need a government that will treat the crisis like the emergency that it is. The status quo is failing catastrophically.\u201d<\/p>\n
