{"id":2184,"date":"2023-09-07T19:30:13","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T18:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/shortall-receives-edward-kennedy-health-policy-award-from-tcd\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T10:41:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:41:24","slug":"shortall-receives-edward-kennedy-health-policy-award-from-tcd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/shortall-receives-edward-kennedy-health-policy-award-from-tcd\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortall receives Edward Kennedy Health Policy Award from TCD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u201cThe guiding principle that has always informed my work is that healthcare is a human right \u2013 not a commodity\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Social Democrats Health Spokesperson R\u00f3is\u00edn Shortall has received the inaugural Edward Kennedy Health Policy Award from the Centre for Health Policy and Management at Trinity College Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>The Edward Kennedy Health Policy Award recognises the importance of key<br \/>\nindividuals, organisations or initiatives that have made meaningful contributions to<br \/>\nIreland\u2019s health system and policy reform &#8211; driving positive and sustained changes in healthcare delivery and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Shortall said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very pleased to accept this award, not only on my own behalf, but on behalf of the many people who contributed to the development of the Sl\u00e1intecare reform programme, as well as those who are currently working on its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guiding principle that has always informed my work is that healthcare is a human right \u2013 not a commodity. Healthcare should be equally accessible and free at the point of access, not available in a hierarchy depending on the depth of one\u2019s pockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIreland\u2019s two-tier healthcare system is not the norm. It is an outlier in Europe. As it stands, men, women and children who don\u2019t have the means to pay for care are left languishing on waiting lists for years. This has many hugely negative impacts \u2013 including children not reaching their full potential; patients\u2019 illnesses deteriorating unnecessarily; as well as premature deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a society we can, and we must, do better. The implementation of the Sl\u00e1intecare plan initially proceeded at a glacial pace \u2013 but it has now finally started to speed up.
