{"id":467,"date":"2018-03-28T09:28:44","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T08:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/official-incompetence-and-lack-of-accountability-at-heart-of-department-of-justice-email-review\/"},"modified":"2018-03-28T09:28:44","modified_gmt":"2018-03-28T08:28:44","slug":"official-incompetence-and-lack-of-accountability-at-heart-of-department-of-justice-email-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/official-incompetence-and-lack-of-accountability-at-heart-of-department-of-justice-email-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Official incompetence and lack of accountability at heart of Department of Justice email review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social Democrats co-leader R\u00f3is\u00edn Shortall TD has expressed incredulity at the findings of the review into the Department of Justice\u2019s failure to forward key documents to the Charleton Tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Shortall said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe review carried out by Senior Counsel Michael Collins shows an alarming degree of incompetence and laxity within the Department in its handling of correspondence on highly sensitive matters related to the whistleblower Maurice McCabe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt beggars belief that relevant emails from May and July of 2015 were not sent to the Tribunal until November 2017 on foot of a trawl ordered by the Taoiseach after concerns were raised in the D\u00e1il.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis review is just the latest in a string of inquires that have raised serious questions about the judgment of senior department officials and its record keeping capacity. \u00a0If the department was so lax in its dealings with an Oireachtas-appointed Tribunal of Inquiry, how can we have any confidence in its handling of other serious issues related to policing and national security?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing in this review that indicates that any senior officials are to be held accountable for the serious failings that it outlines.
