{"id":526,"date":"2018-05-30T08:38:34","date_gmt":"2018-05-30T07:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/political-urgency-needed-in-implementing-slaintecare\/"},"modified":"2018-05-30T08:38:34","modified_gmt":"2018-05-30T07:38:34","slug":"political-urgency-needed-in-implementing-slaintecare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/political-urgency-needed-in-implementing-slaintecare\/","title":{"rendered":"Political urgency needed in implementing Sl\u00e1intecare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social Democrats co-leader R\u00f3is\u00edn Shortall TD has said the Minister for Health needs to show political courage and urgency in implementing the Sl\u00e1intecare health reform plan which was published a year ago today [30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0May 2018].<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Shortall chaired the cross-party Oireachtas Committee on the Future of Healthcare which produced the fully-costed ten-year Sl\u00e1intecare blueprint for radical reform of Ireland\u2019s broken health system.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Shortall said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSl\u00e1intecare is a product of unprecedented political co-operation in facing up to deep-rooted cultural and structural problems within our health service. It\u2019s a ten year, fully-costed plan to provide the kind of modern and accessible health service which this country has lacked for so long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSl\u00e1intecare is about practical reforms to introduce much-needed accountability in our health system and tackle the dysfunctions which have contributed to the recent CervicalCheck scandal, the year-round trolley crisis and the ever-growing waiting lists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinister Simon Harris has acknowledged that there is no alternative plan to Sl\u00e1intecare. Yet he and the Taoiseach have shown a distinct lack of urgency in putting in place the building blocks to implement it.
