{"id":578,"date":"2018-07-18T16:12:11","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T15:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/childrens-minister-should-consider-making-facebook-responsible-for-reporting-abuse\/"},"modified":"2024-01-30T12:36:45","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T12:36:45","slug":"childrens-minister-should-consider-making-facebook-responsible-for-reporting-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/ga\/childrens-minister-should-consider-making-facebook-responsible-for-reporting-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Children\u2019s Minister should consider making Facebook responsible for reporting abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social Democrats Spokesperson for Children Cllr Jennifer Whitmore today called on the Minister for Children to examine making Facebook content moderators who review videos of physical abuse legally obliged to report.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"et-pullquote\"><p>\u201cFacebook\u2019s content moderators are at the coalface of this issue and may often be the first people to see instances of child abuse online.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Social Democrats Spokesperson for Children Cllr Jennifer Whitmore today called on the Minister for Children to examine making Facebook content moderators who review videos of physical abuse legally obliged to report.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Whitmore\u2019s call comes in the wake of last night\u2019s expos\u00e9 on Channel 4\u2019s Dispatches programme which showed that Facebook moderators allowed violent videos, including assaults on children, to remain online after they were reported by viewers.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Whitmore said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone, to examine whether Facebook\u2019s content moderators in Dublin could be legally obliged to report any knowledge that a child has been harmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reporting requirements that already exist come under the Children First Act 2015 and Children First Guidance 2017. Facebook\u2019s content moderators are at the coalface of this issue and may often be the first people to see instances of child abuse online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government must step in and regulate this area properly, and that also means appointing a Digital Safety Commissioner with significant powers.
