Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said the government needs to show real urgency in tackling climate change following today\u2019s damning report by the Sate watchdog, the Climate Change Advisory Council.<\/p>\n
Deputy Murphy said:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is totally shocking that the government is presiding over a situation where our carbon emissions are actually going up at a rate of 2 million tonnes a year, instead of falling by the required 1 million tonnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe country is going backwards on our climate targets to such an extent that you\u2019d have to wonder if there\u2019s anyone in charge at all. The government\u2019s complacency over the pace of transition to a low carbon economy and society is just breath-taking \u2013 and it\u2019s ordinary people who will be saddled with the costs for this into the future.<\/p>\n
\u201cIreland is already facing EU fines for non-compliance with our environmental targets to the tune of \u20ac600 million a year from 2021. The government needs to cop itself on and face up to the challenges with the urgency that is needed. It should start by setting out a clear road map for decarbonisation of the economy and society by 2050, and then act decisively to make this happen.”<\/p>\n
