New figures published by the Central Statistics Office expose the Government\u2019s spin on housing for what it is, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n
Deputy O\u2019Callaghan, who is the party\u2019s spokesperson on housing, said:<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to the CSO, there were 6,884 new dwelling completions in the second quarter of this year \u2013 a fall of 5.4 per cent on the same three months of 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201cApartment completions fell by a worrying 15.1 per cent during the same period.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese figures expose the spin behind the Minister for Housing\u2019s constant praise of the rising number of commencement notices.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact of the matter is people can not live in a commencement notice and the actual number of homes being built is falling when we need it to be rising.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis Government has made it clear that they are incapable of tackling the housing crisis. Rents, house prices, and the number of people in homeless accommodation have all reached previously unimaginable heights.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe general election cannot come soon enough.”<\/p>\n
