In what could be this Government\u2019s final monthly homelessness report, they have again surpassed another grim record, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n

Deputy O\u2019Callaghan, who is the party\u2019s spokesperson on housing, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen this Government was formed in June 2020, there were 8,699 people in homeless emergency accommodation, 2,653 of them children.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are now\u00a014,760\u00a0people living in homeless emergency accommodation.<\/p>\n

\u201cShockingly, 4,561 of these are children \u2013 a 72 per cent increase since this Government took office.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of the 52 monthly homeless reports during this Government\u2019s tenure, homelessness has increased 41 times and a new record has been set 23 times.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important we do not lose sight of what these statistics mean. Every time someone becomes homeless a life is devastated. Every child growing up without a home is a tragedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThousands are being forced to go through this trauma while the Government has a \u20ac25 billion budget surplus. It is cruel and completely unacceptable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe depressing familiarity of this record being broken is an indictment of this Government\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
