Fianna F\u00e1il and Fine Gael are trying to derail this election by engaging in relentless bickering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis focus on petty rivalry suits the outgoing coalition partners \u2013 because instead of talking about their many failures in office, we are talking about their personality clashes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Social Democrats\u2019 manifesto puts a spotlight back on the issues that are important to people \u2013 housing, healthcare, childcare, disability services and climate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt offers people a clear choice. Five more years of Fianna F\u00e1il and Fine Gael failure \u2013 or a new approach and a better future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo often, political leaders make commitments that they know cannot be delivered. Like promising big tax cuts, along with huge investment in public services. That\u2019s not being straight with voters \u2013 and it\u2019s not credible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we are being very clear in this election. The Social Democrats will only enter a government which delivers:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2060 50,000 affordable purchase homes<\/li>\n<li>\u2060 The full implementation of Sl\u00e1intecare<\/li>\n<li>\u2060 Quality public childcare<\/li>\n<li>\u2060 Credible climate action<\/li>\n<li>\u2060 And a senior Minister for Disability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are our deal breakers \u2013 and the detail of how they can be delivered is outlined in our manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ability to deliver on this will depend on the size of our mandate. We are hopeful the Irish people will give us a large one in this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Other measures in the Social Democrats\u2019 manifesto include<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Deliver 50,000 affordable purchase, 25,000 affordable rental homes and 70,000 social homes over the lifetime of the next government.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>End \u2018no-fault evictions\u2019 to protect renters and introduce a temporary three-year rent freeze.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Replace rent pressure zones with a \u2018reference rent\u2019 system.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Provide for salaried GPs and increase the mental health budget to 10% of the overall health budget.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Increase funding for disability services by an additional \u20ac1.1 billion a year, to include a \u20ac30 per week cost of disability payment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Abolish the means test for carers and introduce a statutory right to homecare.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>A new public model of childcare; paid parental leave extended to the first year of a child\u2019s life; and maternity, paternity and parent\u2019s benefit increased to \u20ac350 per week.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>Install solar panels on 500,000 homes during the lifetime of the next government and make solar panels free for low-income households.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>Double the size of our natural parks and ensure they feature highly protected areas within them, where nature can be restored.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>A \u20ac5 billion climate transformation fund for investment in State-owned renewable energy and a \u20ac1.5bn fair transition fund for farmers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li>Make education genuinely free; establish a new D\u00e9is+ scheme for schools in areas of extreme disadvantage; and work to remove faith formation from the school day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li>Establish directly elected mayors in all of our major cities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"13\">\n<li>Introduce a \u20ac150 Sports and Cultural Activity voucher for all children aged 6 to 18 and free public transport for all children aged under 18.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"14\">\n<li>Introduce a lower 9% VAT rate for struggling food and beverage businesses in hospitality.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"15\">\n<li>Pursue a health-led approach to drug use and decriminalise the possession of small quantities of drugs for personal consumption.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>November 19, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: You can read the manifesto in full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialdemocrats.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/GEManifesto24-1.pdf\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Social Democrats today published their general election manifesto.
