Local Election Galway City Central

Sharon is an activist and feminist. Originally from Roscommon, she moved to Galway to attend college and fell in love with the city that she now calls home. She lives with her partner in Galway’s West End and works remotely as a customer support lead for an eCommerce platform. Her core values are based around workers rights, better housing protections, and social justice issues. She also aims to work on including more diverse voices in politics, especially at a local level where all residents have a vote and should be engaged.

While always interested in politics, the Marriage Equality campaign turned that interest into action. From there she joined Niall Ó Tuathail’s 2016 election campaign and the Social Democrats. She sat on the party’s first National Executive and is involved with her local Galway West branch.

She is a passionate pro-choice advocate and was the co-convener for Galway Together for Yes. She’s an LGBTQ+ rights campaigner and has been Galway’s Bi+ Ireland co-ordinator for the last number of years. She’s also worked with Galway Community Pride, LGBT Ireland, runs education and advocacy workshops, and was awarded the Activist Volunteer of the Year award at the 2017 GALAs for her work with the queer community.

Collaborating to better Galway city is one of Sharon’s main goals, and she wants to work with her entire community to acheive that for everyone.

Looking forward to hearing that.

Busy week of canvassing across Shantalla and the Westside 🙌 Thanks for the heartfelt conversations, the support, the questions, and the welcomes!

We also had flyers for the Raise The Roof Galway demonstration on April 8th on Eyre Square to support the Housing Emergency motion going to the Galway City Council meeting that day. Please come and support!

Today is International Day Against Racism. I'm proud to stand with the Galway Traveller Movement along with some of our fellow Galway City Council councillors and candidates signed up to the Anti-Racism Election Protocol in their office today.

As a candidate of the Social Democrats in the 2019 local elections, I agree:

* To send a consistent and clear message to my constituents that I reject racism and all forms of discrimination and hate speech.

* To condemn any campaign materials or statements that may incite hatred or express prejudice on the grounds of ‘race’, colour, nationality or origin, ethnic background, religious belief, or membership of the Traveller Community.

* To guarantee that when engaging in ongoing debate in relation to groups which are the potential targets of racism, including asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, people of African or Asian origin, people of Jewish faith, Muslims, Roma and Travellers, my contribution to such debate is conducted in a responsible way and with respect for the dignity and rights of all members of the human race.

* To use appropriate and inclusive language and words when referring to people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds, in order to avoid stereotyping, prejudice or confusion.

* To endeavour to use images in my election material that reflects the diversity of our society.

* To inform all of my political campaigners about the intent and contents of this Protocol.

* To inform constituents that I have signed up to this Protocol and endorse the No Hate Speech Movement.
