New Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar must follow through on his commitment to EU values and reverse Hungary’s draconian anti-LGBTI law, according to Social Democrats foreign affairs spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.
Senator Stephenson said:
“The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that Hungary’s 2021 ‘anti-LGBTI propaganda’ law breaches Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union, which enshrines the Union’s fundamental values.
“This ruling, which found that the Orbán regime seriously interfered with the fundamental rights of those in the LGBTI community, is long overdue and welcome.
“It’s long past time that discrimination based on sexual orientation is ended in Hungary, and that there is respect for private and family life, freedom of expression and the right to human dignity.
“It is now imperative that Péter Magyar, who asserts that he is pro-EU, withdraws Hungary’s anti-LGBTI law at the earliest possible opportunity, including the Pride ban – there are no more excuses.
“I support the court’s decision that, if these changes are not forthcoming, Hungary must face due process for this discriminatory law.”
