It is outrageous that the Seanad has yet to dedicate debate time to discussing the ongoing genocide in Gaza, according to Social Democrats Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.
Senator Stephenson said:
“Incredibly, there has yet to be a dedicated debate in the Seanad to discuss the genocide in Gaza. This is outrageous and inexplicable.
“At the Order of Business today, I’ve invited all of the opposition technical groups to voice their support for a dedicated debate on Palestine.
“As part of this co-ordinated action, the names of just a tiny minority of the healthcare workers, journalists and children who have been murdered by the Israeli state will be read into the Seanad record.
“We must use our voices in the Seanad to demand urgent action in this country, at EU level and internationally.
“Israel has now said it allows a ‘basic’ amount of food into Gaza – an utterly despicable pretence at lifting the blockade. Since then, just five trucks were allowed into Gaza carrying a small amount of food aid which has yet to even be distributed.
“What is happening in Gaza – the deliberate starvation of two million people and the flagrant breaches of humanitarian law – is grotesque and despicable. The murderous Israeli government has lost all humanity.
“The Israeli state is intent on committing a genocide in Gaza. That much is clear. What is unclear is why other Western countries, who profess to care about human rights and international law, are refusing to take action.
“The EU, in particular, has been especially pathetic – refusing to even issue a joint statement condemning Israel for its slaughter.
“As parliamentarians, we must continue to raise our voices for action and sanctions against Israel. I hope my government colleagues in the Seanad will belatedly now agree to have a debate on this crucial issue.”
