Camogie players must be given the autonomy to choose whether they wear skorts or shorts during matches, according to Social Democrats TD Sinéad Gibney.
“It simply beggars belief that we have to talk about this in 2025. The Camogie Association’s requirement for girls and women to wear skorts is something that should have been relegated to the distant past a long time ago.
“It is certainly not a rule that is appropriate for modern day Ireland, where we cherish values such as equality, dignity and respect.
“We have seen much progress over the last number of years in women’s sport – in grassroots participation, in broadcasting and viewership numbers. However, this daft regulation flies in the face of the push for inclusion and more female participation in sport.
“I would like to commend the Dublin and Kilkenny players for taking a stand during the Leinster semi-final over the weekend. In doing so, they have sent a powerful message to the Camogie Association, which must listen to their players and revise this ridiculous rule.
“A survey by the Gaelic Players’ Association found that an overwhelming majority of players experienced discomfort while wearing skorts, with 83 per cent believing they should have a right to choose shorts if they want to.
“Parking this issue until the next congress in 2027 is not acceptable – the Camogie Association must address this now.
“We ask so much of our athletes, who are role models in their communities and clubs – let’s show them the respect they deserve.”
