The Minister for Foreign Affairs should contact the British Ambassador to Ireland to raise concerns about the plight of detained Palestine Action activists in the UK, according to Social Democrats Foreign Affairs spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.

Senator Stephenson said:

“I am deeply concerned about the ongoing hunger strike involving the Filton 24 in England, who are being held on remand in connection with protest actions motivated by the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

“They remain in custody without trial while their health and lives are now at critical risk. The use of prolonged pre-trial detention in cases arising from political protest raises profound concerns about proportionality, due process, and the protection of fundamental rights.

“This suffering extends to their families, who are experiencing overt trauma as they watch loved ones deteriorate in custody. No one should face a risk to life or lasting harm for acting in conscience in response to mass civilian suffering.

“I recognise the depth of concern being expressed by so many in Ireland and beyond for these activists. Ireland’s history gives us a particular understanding of hunger strike and its human cost.

“That experience underscores the urgency of protecting life and health and preventing further, irreversible harm. It is essential that we continue to speak out, remain vigilant, and focus our attention on the protection of life and human rights at all times.”

“The Minister for Foreign Affairs should contact the British Ambassador to Ireland to raise concerns about the plight of these activists whose lives are now in danger.”
