At an international housing event today, Social Democrats TD Rory Hearne repeated his call on the government to retain rent caps,
Deputy Hearne made his comments at the International Union of Tenants’ forum in the Conference Centre, Dublin, which will see more than 2,000 people taking part in the International Social Housing Festival.
He said:
“Renters in Ireland are struggling to pay some of the most expensive rents in Europe, yet have among the least protections and tenants’ rights. This is particularly true in the case of security of tenure and the ability of a landlord to evict tenants when selling a property.
“Today, I am renewing my call on the government to retain rent caps, which is the minimum protection renters have in this country. We learned today from Germany, Sweden and other countries that retain strong rental protections of the importance of delivering affordable homes and giving renters security – neither of which our government is doing sufficiently.
“The International Union of Tenants are standing with us in our demands to protect renters, and I deeply appreciate their support. As stated today by Marie Linder, president of IUT, just building houses is not enough – homes must be affordable. She also correctly pointed out that security of tenure and open-ended rental contracts are the cornerstone of a fair and just housing policy.”
