Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly has called on the Minister for Children to provide full details of the review she has requested Tusla to carry out in the case of a missing child in north county Dublin.

Deputy Farrelly, who is the party’s spokesperson on children, said:

“The entire country is in shock as the harrowing search for a missing child continues today in Donabate. First and foremost, my thoughts are with him.

“This latest case comes just one year after schoolboy Kyran Durnin was first reported missing from his Drogheda home. It is particularly disquieting that gardaí are now investigating the disappearance of two children, who, tragically, are both presumed to be deceased.

“As it has emerged that Tusla had engaged with the child at the centre of the latest investigation, I welcome that Minister Norma Foley has now asked the agency to carry out a wellbeing check on all children’s cases during Covid-19 – starting with cases that were closed.

“However, I am asking the Minister to publish the specific request she has made to Tusla so we can see the full scope of any review and understand what role the National Review Panel will play in this process. Given the gravity of the situation, this review must be thorough and carried out as a matter of urgency.

“We also need to know if Tusla is properly resourced within its current budgetary allocation to conduct this review effectively and efficiently.”
