I’m Karl Stanley, the Social Democrats councillor for Clontarf in Dublin.
I live in Fairview with my wife and my two teenagers. I went to school nearby and have lived in the area for nearly 30 years. I love it here, halfway between the sea and the city centre – I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!
As a daily cyclist in Dublin since the early 1990s, I’m passionate about making sure we have safe, segregated cycle infrastructure so that as many people as possible can have the opportunity for active travel. I’m particularly interested in providing safe routes to schools so our young people can learn independence and develop active travel habits.
I spent most of my professional life working in software engineering, but after a few decades in the private sector it is time to do something that gives back to the community – Dublin has provided me with all sorts of wonderful opportunities over the years and I want to make sure that the city remains a vibrant and exciting place to live, learn and work.
In economic terms, Ireland has done very well in recent decades, but there is still a lot of work to do to make sure that the benefits are shared fairly. At a local level, this means pushing for truly affordable housing and childcare and targeting investment in future-proof low-carbon transport options.
