This kind of treatment of a peaceful protestor is horrific and completely unacceptable
Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Harris must raise the brutal treatment of a peaceful Irish protestor by German police with the German ambassador, according to Social Democrats foreign affairs spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.
Senator Stephenson said:
“A shocking video, circulating on social media, shows German police, at a Gaza protest in Berlin, repeatedly punching a peaceful Irish activist in the face.
“In the video, blood can be seen pouring from the woman’s nose as she is viciously beaten by police, before being violently dragged off by two of them.
“This kind of treatment of a peaceful protestor is horrific and completely unacceptable – particularly in the EU, where freedom of speech and the right to protest is supposed to be protected.
“Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Harris must raise the brutal treatment of this Irish woman with the German ambassador today. He must also ensure she has the consular and medical care and support she needs.
“I am utterly disgusted to see the depths to which some EU countries have sunk, not only arming a genocide in Gaza – but violently suppressing those who are brave enough to speak out and peacefully protest about the slaughter.”
