Micheál Martin must clarify if he formally invited US President Donald Trump to Ireland for a State visit later this year, according to Social Democrats foreign affairs spokesperson Patricia Stephenson.

Senator Stephenson said:

“In the Oval Office yesterday, US President Donald Trump said Micheál Martin had told him he hoped that he came to Ireland later this year for the Irish open.

“While Trump is, of course, free to fly to Ireland and visit his hotel and golf course, this should not morph into a State visit – with all the pomp and expense that would entail.

“It would be outrageous if the government were to roll out a red carpet for a warmonger who has attacked seven different countries since he came into office just over a year ago.

“Mere weeks ago, Trump launched an unprovoked and illegal war in Iran, which is devastating the region and causing energy prices to soar for Irish consumers.

“Any State visit would involve Trump being feted and celebrated in this country – and cost the Irish people an enormous sum of money. It would be unconscionable for any such visit to take place.

“The Taoiseach must now clarify exactly what he said to Trump yesterday and rule out the prospect of any State visit taking place.”
