Dublin Bay North TD and Social Democrats spokesperson for Housing, Cian O’Callaghan, has said that barriers to accessing emergency accommodation must be removed as homeless figures remain too high.
Deputy O’Callaghan said:
“The latest figures released by the Department of Housing show that the number of people becoming homeless and living in emergency accommodation remains too high. During September, there were 6,073 adults living in emergency accommodation for homeless people, as well as 2,583 children.
“There are alarming reports that those sleeping rough are finding it increasingly difficult to access emergency accommodation and register as homeless. It appears that these changes brought in since Covid-19 restrictions began are suppressing the numbers of people entering emergency homeless accommodation.
“We cannot tolerate a situation where people are sleeping rough and being denied access to emergency accommodation.”
