With the right level of investment Ireland can showcase the vibrancy of its culture all year around, not just one night a year, Social Democrats spokesperson on Arts Development, Councillor Gary Gannon said today.

Cllr Gannon was speaking ahead of the 13th annual Culture Night tonight, which sees events taking place in Dublin and across Ireland.

Cllr Gannon said:

“All across the country tonight, hundreds of artists will throw open the doors of their studios and workspaces and invite members of the public to join them in what is a really unique celebration of our arts scene. This event is a real highlight of the cultural calendar – it allows people from all walks of life to meet actual working artists and learn about their interests, their creative inspirations and their significant contribution to our society and our economy.

“With the right level of ongoing investment in the arts sector, our towns and cities can be thriving bastions of continual culture each and every night of the year. If this is to become a reality though, the government needs to stick to its commitment to bring Ireland into line with the rest of the EU when it comes to arts funding. The government has committed to double funding and investment in the arts over a five-year period – what we need to see is a clear roadmap for how that it is to be achieved.”
