Children who were displaced by the fire at the Moria refugee camp in Greece are in a race against time to be relocated to Ireland, Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore has warned.

Speaking in the Dáil today, Deputy Whitmore urged the Taoiseach to find an urgent solution to the humanitarian crisis and called on the Government to honour a previous commitment to relocate 14 children to Ireland.

She said:

“These children were identified as part of our contribution to the EU Refugee Relocation Programme and were to be brought over here through the involvement of Tusla and the Garda Síochána. This process has been seriously delayed due to Covid-19 and the window to relocate these children will close at the end of this month.

“The Taoiseach gave me an undertaking today that he will engage with all the relevant agencies to find a solution to this issue.

“It is vital that this mission does not end. The Government needs to urgently redouble its efforts to bring these vulnerable children to safety.”
