The Social Democrats are hosting a Think-In for members in Cork city this weekend as part of the party’s preparation for the next General Election.

The event brings together Social Democrats members from around the country to discuss the policies and politics underpinning its social democratic vision and how we can best bring that unique perspective to building a fairer, better Ireland. It is hosted by the party’s Cork branches.

The Think-In opens tonight with an audience discussion attended by the party’s co-leaders, Róisín Shortall TD and Catherine Murphy TD.

Speaking ahead of the event, Deputy Shortall said the Social Democrats are steadily building a presence around the country.

“We have a whole slate of candidates gearing up for the next election. The party is now organised in 30 constituencies and has selected nine General Election candidates so far, with more selections due in the coming months. We have a strong and growing presence in Cork with a group of really hard working and dedicated local representatives. We are confident that our Cork representatives will be serious challengers for seats at the next election.”

Deputy Murphy added:

“There’s a very clear desire and hunger on many people’s part to see younger people involved in politics and to see a new kind of politics, and that’s what the Social Democrats are about. We offer honest politics, accountability in politics and ensuring good quality public services and sustainable economic development.”

The Social Democrats have four branches in Cork city and county, with six local area representatives, and Councillor Joe Harris in Douglas.

The party’s local area representatives are: Cork City North East Sinéad Halpin; Cork City South West Pádraig Rice; Cork City South Central Patricia O’Dwyer; Cobh Ken Curtin; Ballincollig Ciaran McCarthy; and Macroom Sile Ní Dhubhgaill.

Patricia O’Dwyer said:

“We want to use the opportunity of the Think-In to talk with each other about how to solve Ireland’s critical challenges such as health, housing, education, precarious working and social inclusion to name a few.”

The Members Think-In event starts on Friday 10th November and runs until 5pm on Saturday 11th November. It will include members’ discussions and expert talks on key areas of policy as well as workshops and masterclasses.
